iOS 18 will bring more flexibility to the home screen: here's what we expect

iOS 18 traerá más flexibilidad a la pantalla de inicio: esto es lo que esperamos

Expectations are growing around iOS 18, the next version of Apple's operating system that promises to revolutionize the iPhone. And, according to recent reports, it will also allow us an even greater customization of our iPhone's home screen.

iOS 18: Greater customization and AI

Mark Gurman, from Bloomberg, has published this very weekend that a new standout feature of iOS 18 will be the flexibility in customizing the iPhone's home screen. For the first time, users will have the freedom to place app icons wherever we want, allowing empty spaces and offering greater customization.

So far, the app grid on our iPhone's screen has always been sequential, with one app behind another. Only with the arrival of widgets were we able to add some dynamism to this setup. Now, however, with iOS 18, it seems that the situation will change substantially. Being able to place any app anywhere on the screen, while still adhering to the underlying grid, customization options grow exponentially.

And the news doesn't end with the aesthetics of our home screen, which, in fact, could surprise us by drawing inspiration from visionOS. We already know that with iOS 18, and Gurman reiterates it, Apple plans to incorporate a series of features powered by artificial intelligence (AI) that promise to enrich the experience in unimaginable ways.

From a Siri with much more power and intelligent responses in the Messages app, to the creation of videos from text, modifying images with voice commands to Siri, automating software development with Xcode, and more, several of these AIs have already been confirmed and patented.

A series of own AI to which, in the words of Tim Cook, Apple is "investing a tremendous amount of time and effort,” even with the help of ChatGPT and with the possibility of including the skills of Gemini, a set of artificial intelligence models from Google, to bring their users the best daily technological experiences.

It's clear that Apple is preparing to launch a historic update with iOS 18. One that will arrive alongside other operating systems, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024) in June. A conference from which, while we are expectant for Apple to announce its exact date, we can expect many surprises.
