As we approach the unveiling of iOS 18 at the upcoming WWDC 2024, a rumor has caught our attention: the possibility that the new iPhone operating system will incorporate design elements from visionOS, featured in the new Apple Vision Pro. A step forward in the pursuit of a more unified and seamless interface.
iOS 18 and visionOS bring a unified design
The rumor, originating from the Israeli website The Verifier (via MacRumors), indicates that Apple is working on integrating visual aspects of visionOS into iOS 18. This could include anything from a translucent navigation bar in the Apple TV app (which has already arrived in tvOS 17.3) to a complete redesign of menus and applications, including Safari.
While the source is ambiguous, and such assumptions are easy to make, the idea of a more unified design language is consistent with the direction Apple has taken in recent years. The company's commitment to design cohesion has long been clear. This is especially evident in the Mac, which, since Big Sur, has moved much closer to the iPhone's design.
It's clear that adapting to the specific needs of each device is crucial, starting with whether the interface is designed for gaze interaction, keyboard and mouse, or touch. But it's easy to envision a harmonization in design elements, including the use of colors, gradients, and shadows to highlight elements and organize information.
The last major redesign of iOS happened a long time ago. And we've already started to see subtle changes in certain areas of the iPhone's operating system, like the Messages app menu with iOS 17. So a renewal could easily fit into Apple's plans.
As we look forward to all the new products coming in 2024, including the new iPad Pros and the new iPad Airs, rumors about iOS 18 and iPadOS 18, always more difficult to verify due to their internal development within the company, are raising questions. We'll see what surprises Apple has in store for us at the next WWDC in June 2024.
