The security of our homes is greatly enhanced thanks to HomeKit, Apple’s platform for managing smart home devices—but especially so with one particular setting. The HomeKit Activity History allows us to verify how the devices that keep our home safe are behaving. With this setting, we can monitor all events related to our home’s security over the past 30 days, helping us stay in control at all times.
How to enable HomeKit Activity History
The activity history is only available for security-related accessories, such as door locks, cameras, and alarm systems. While it may be enabled automatically in some cases, it's always a good idea to double-check that it’s set up correctly. These are the steps we’ll follow to do that:
- We open the Home app on our iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- We tap the three-dot button inside a circle at the top right of the screen.
- We go to Home Settings.
- We select Security.
- We set the history interval by choosing the One Month option.
With this setting, we make sure that every security-related action is logged for 30 days—from locking or unlocking a door to any activity picked up by our cameras or alarms. This level of detail gives us peace of mind, knowing everything is working as it should—or that we’ll be able to quickly spot any irregularity.
How to check the HomeKit Activity History
Once enabled, checking the HomeKit activity history is really easy. From the Home app, we can access a detailed log of recent activity from our security devices. We just need to follow these steps:
- We open the Home app on our device.
- At the top, we tap on the Security category.
- We go into the Activity History section.
Here we’ll see a list of all the events. This history is also visible to all household members, which makes it easier for all of us to keep an eye on whether everything in our smart home is working as it should. It’s worth noting, however, that the activity history is automatically deleted after 30 days.
Why this setting is key to home security
At a time when security flaws and unauthorized access are common issues with certain smart home devices from some manufacturers, having full control over our security devices seems simply essential.
Thanks to this setting in the Home app, we have the ability to monitor and manage the security of our smart home with great precision, right at our fingertips. Enabling it takes just a few steps, but the impact on our peace of mind is massive.
