Cómo restaurar los ajustes sin borrar los datos de un iPhone o iPad

There are basically two circumstances in which we would want to erase the content of our iPhone or iPad: the first is to prepare the device for sale or gifting, and the second is to fix certain errors.

In the second scenario, we've often heard that restoring the device can generally resolve software issues. However, before taking this step, there's an intermediate solution we can try: deleting all the settings of the device while keeping the data intact.

It's something like a softer restoration

Before going into a full restoration of our device, which would lead us to start configuration from scratch, it's interesting to try if a slightly lighter option can solve the error. Just as we can reset our AirPods and restore them to factory settings, the action we are going to perform is called Reset Settings, which Apple describes as follows:

"All settings, including network settings, keyboard dictionaries, app layout on the Home screen, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards, are erased or reset to their default setting. No other data or content is deleted."

This means, in short, that we can erase all the settings without deleting photos, messages, notes, emails, music, videos, and other content from the device. This allows us to simplify the process and, at the same time, almost certainly solve the error we are looking to fix. The steps to carry out this restoration are as follows:

  1. We open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
  2. We navigate to General.
  3. We select Transfer or Reset iPhone/iPad.
  4. We choose the Reset option.
  5. We enter the device's passcode.
  6. We tap on Reset once more.

After completing this, all the device's settings and preferences will either revert to their original state or be deleted. Following this process, which includes a restart that's slightly longer than usual, we can re-add our cards to Apple Pay and adjust some settings according to our preferences. Then, we should be all set to use the device again, ideally without any errors.
