When we unplug a Mac with a battery, like a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air, the screen brightness slightly decreases. This is done to reduce power consumption, as screen illumination is one of the main drains on the battery. So, when the computer switches from unlimited electricity to relying on its own resources, the brightness dims. However, this is something we can prevent.
How to prevent the brightness from diminishing
Although it's true that we can easily increase the brightness again, it's also true that we can choose to avoid this change. There are various situations, such as during video and photo editing, color correction, or even for watching movies or playing games, where maximum brightness is always preferable.
In these cases, it's possible to disable the automatic brightness reduction. To do this, while in macOS Sonoma, simply follow these steps:
- Click on the Apple icon in the menu bar and select System Settings.
- Go to Displays in the left sidebar.
- Disable the Automatically adjust brightness option.
In macOS Ventura, the process is slightly different. Once in the Displays section, click on Advanced and disable the option Slightly dim the display on battery. In earlier versions of macOS, like Monterey or Big Sur, this option is found in System Preferences > Battery, while in Catalina or earlier, it is in System Preferences > Energy Saving > Battery.
By setting our Mac this way, we manage to keep the computer's screen brightness constant, offering optimal viewing at all times, even if we unplug it from the power source. And if at any point we wish to return to the default setting, we simply follow the same steps and reactivate the option. Meanwhile, although it seems like a minor detail, this small change can make a significant difference when using our computer.
