In the world of image editing, we often find ourselves searching for specialized software for specific tasks. However, on our Macs, there's a built-in tool that's important to keep in mind: Preview. An app that allows us to resize images in batches on the Mac with just a few clicks.
A couple of preliminary steps
The first thing we need to do is locate the images we want to edit; they all need to be in the same folder. So, if necessary, we copy or move them into the same folder on the desktop or in a Finder folder. If the photos are inside the Photos app, we need to export them by selecting and dragging them to said folder.
Once all the images are gathered, we need to select them all. We can do this by holding down the Command key and selecting manually or by pressing Command (⌘) + A. Then, we simply double-click on any image to open them, or, if they open with another app, right-click and select Open With > Preview.
How to resize the images
Once we have all the images open in the same window, it's time to resize them all at once. Just as we can use Preview on the Mac to convert images, resizing them is as easy as following these steps:
- In the View menu, we click on the Thumbnails option.
- On the left sidebar of thumbnails, we click on any of them.
- We press Command (⌘) + A to select them all.
- In the Tools menu, we click on Adjust Size.
- We choose the Width, Height, and Resolution we want.
- We click OK.
- We close Preview.
Keep in mind, however, that this procedure edits the original images we have selected. So, if we want to keep the originals as well as the resized images, we must make a copy before starting.
Preview is a truly versatile tool that goes far beyond simply viewing documents and images. As we've just seen, in the case of batch resizing images, the process is straightforward and simple, eliminating the need for additional software, which often comes at a cost. Fortunately, when it comes to resizing dozens or hundreds of images in one go, Preview is ready for us.
