Too often, a photo includes some background object that we find unnecessary. It could be a sign, another person who shouldn't be in the frame, or a utility pole, to name a few examples. Now, we can fix this very easily directly in the iPhone's Photos app. Apple Intelligence's Clean Up feature allows us to perfect our photographs by quickly removing any unwanted elements from our images. Let's discuss how to do it.
Clean Up: The Power of Apple Intelligence in iOS 18.1
Apple Intelligence, introduced with iOS 18.1, brings a slew of new features to our iPhones. Assuming we've updated to this version and have activated Apple Intelligence (which is not yet possible for European Apple accounts), the steps to clean up a photo with Clean Up are as simple as follows:
- Open the Photos app and select the image you want to edit.
- Tap the Edit button, represented by three horizontal bars.
- Choose the Clean Up option.
- The tool automatically highlights the objects you might want to remove with a special glow. If the object is selected, simply touch it to remove it. If it’s not selected, you can manually select it by drawing a circle around it or painting over it.
- Once the object has been removed, confirm the changes by tapping Done.
While the results may vary depending on the complexity of the background and the content of the image, in most cases, they are simply stunning.
Moreover, the editing is non-destructive, which means we can recover the original image whenever we need it. This is something we can do even months after making the changes.
With Clean Up in iOS 18.1, we have gained the ability to quickly and easily transform our photos, effortlessly eliminating any unwanted distractions. It’s a tool that simplifies photo editing so we can achieve the best possible image in each shot—a tool that requires nothing more than drawing a circle around any object to make it disappear.
