Apple Intelligence and ChatGPT: how to access OpenAI’s models for free, what we can do with them and how privacy is protected

ChatGPT Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence allows us to use OpenAI’s models directly from our iPhone. This means we can enjoy more comprehensive answers, generate text and images, and use visual recognition without compromising our privacy. It is a feature that lets us go beyond Siri and on-device intelligence whenever a task requires a little more.

How to enable ChatGPT on our iPhone

We do not even need an OpenAI account to start using ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence. We simply have to follow these steps:

  1. We open the Settings app.
  2. We go to Apple Intelligence & Siri.
  3. Under Extensions, we tap ChatGPT.
  4. We turn on Use ChatGPT.

If we have a free or paid account, we can sign in from this same menu to keep our conversation history. This is useful if we want to return to our queries from the ChatGPT app or website, although it is less appealing from a privacy perspective.

Signing in also gives us access to OpenAI’s most advanced models and a much higher daily limit for free use. It is entirely optional, however, as we never need to sign in to use ChatGPT on the iPhone.

What we can do with the ChatGPT integration

Once ChatGPT is enabled, Siri automatically detects when a request requires a deeper level of understanding and uses the service to answer certain questions. We can ask it to write text, create images, or analyse documents and photos. For example:

  • Ask questions about a document or request a summary directly from the Notes app.
  • Identify objects or places by taking a photo with Visual Intelligence.
  • Dictate a description to generate an image with Image Playground.

For greater control over our data, we can enable Confirm ChatGPT Requests in the extension settings. Siri will then ask for our permission before sending any content to OpenAI.

Privacy and the advantages of using Apple Intelligence with OpenAI

Unlike what we explained when discussing how to use ChatGPT, the questions and interactions we carry out with OpenAI’s chatbot from our iPhone through Apple Intelligence are not used to train its models or stored in any form.

Apple has designed this integration so that our personal information is processed as securely as possible. Requests made without signing in conceal our IP address and only provide the service with our general location.

At Hanaringo, ChatGPT is a regular part of our training sessions. The potential of AI on our devices is simply enormous, and taking our first steps with clear guidance is already an excellent foundation for success.

While ChatGPT can plan our holidays, its integration with Apple Intelligence offers us a particularly compelling combination of power and privacy. With the right settings, we can turn our iPhone into a platform that helps us create, learn and work more efficiently.
