Yesterday, Apple released the latest updates for all its operating systems. iOS 18, iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, macOS Sequoia, visionOS 2, and tvOS 18 are now available, introducing exciting new features and innovations that will significantly enhance our experience with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch, among others. Let’s dive into the key features of each system.
iOS 18: Customization and Flexibility
As we saw in full during WWDC 2024, iOS 18 has arrived with a series of important improvements that focus on customization and flexibility.
One of the standout new features is the ability to freely rearrange apps and widgets on the home screen, allowing us to place them in any open space and resize them with great flexibility.
Additionally, key app icons now come in dark tones, which can automatically switch when dark mode is activated. There are also new color options for tinting icons and widgets, further enhancing the visual look of our iPhone.
Control Center has been completely redesigned, allowing third-party controls and enabling the management of multiple control pages. We can now place controls on the lock screen and activate them using the action button (available on iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro models).
The Messages app has also received a major update. We can now schedule messages to be sent later, and Tapbacks support any emoji. Additionally, new text effects and formatting options like bold or italic are available to personalize conversations.
Another noteworthy addition is an independent password manager, making it easier to manage passwords and credentials in one place. Furthermore, phone calls can now be recorded directly in the Notes app, with the option for automatic transcriptions.
Finally, iOS 18 introduces the ability to lock and hide any app with Face ID or Touch ID, providing greater security and privacy. Safari has also been improved with a distraction control mode that allows users to hide annoying elements on web pages.
macOS Sequoia: Productivity and Continuity
macOS 15 Sequoia, the latest version of the Mac operating system, brings innovative features aimed at improving productivity and creativity.
One of the main new features is iPhone Mirroring, which lets us control and access our iPhone directly from the Mac. We can now view and manage iPhone notifications, open its apps, and even interact with them using the Mac's keyboard and trackpad.
Another significant improvement in macOS Sequoia is window organization. It’s now easier to arrange multiple windows on the screen, thanks to improved tiling, allowing windows to be dragged to the edges or corners for quick positioning. Keyboard shortcuts have also been added to speed up this process.
In Safari, like on iPhone and iPad, the new Distraction Control mode stands out, hiding elements that may interfere with browsing. A Viewer mode has also been introduced to make watching videos more seamless by automatically switching to Picture-in-Picture mode when navigating away from the page.
macOS Sequoia also improves native apps like Messages, which now supports text effects and scheduled messages, and Notes, with a new Math Notes feature that solves complex equations automatically within the note. Apple Maps will also feature topographic maps and custom hiking routes.
watchOS 11: Health and Improved Functionality
watchOS 11, for Apple Watch, focuses on providing new health tools and more personalization options.
Among the key new features is the Vitals app, which provides a daily report of key health metrics, such as heart rate and breathing during sleep. Additionally, for athletes, the new Training Load metric helps analyze the impact of workouts over time.
watchOS 11 also adds personalized hiking routes and walking trails to the Maps app, which can be downloaded for offline access.
Another significant update is the ability to customize activity rings on a daily basis, allowing users to set higher goals for specific days or pause them when needed, such as during rest days or illness.
Moreover, Apple Watch now includes a translation app, with support for 20 languages, enabling us to translate phrases right from our wrist.
Finally, the Smart Stack has been enhanced with interactive widgets and Live Activities, offering real-time information about events or tasks, all accessible via the digital crown on the watch.
visionOS 2, tvOS 18, and HomePod Updates: Immersive Experience Innovation
Alongside iOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and watchOS 11, Apple has also released visionOS 2, tvOS 18, and a software update for HomePod.
visionOS 2, for the impressive Apple Vision Pro, enables the creation of spatial photos from 2D images, enhanced customization of the home view, and better keyboard usage when navigating immersive environments. Additionally, the "Persona" has been updated to better reflect our real appearance.
Meanwhile, tvOS 18 introduces InSight, a feature that provides real-time information about actors and characters, similar to Amazon's X-ray. Apple has also improved Enhance Dialogue, optimizing audio for clearer dialogue.
Finally, HomePod Software 18 brings updates like SharePlay, allowing multiple users to share control of what's playing on the HomePod via Apple Music. It also adds Spatial Audio, offering an immersive sound experience with Dolby Atmos.
Altogether, this new wave of updates marks a significant leap forward in terms of customization, productivity, and user experience, with key improvements for iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch, and other devices. Now, we eagerly await the revolutionary Apple Intelligence features.
