The security in messaging applications has never been as crucial as it is now, and WhatsApp has finally taken a step forward to reinforce the protection of its users. With the announcement of the introduction of passkeys in its iPhone app, WhatsApp aligns with the latest trends in data protection and privacy, moving away from traditional passwords.

Passkeys finally arrive on WhatsApp

WhatsApp has announced a significant update for its iPhone users: the introduction of passkeys, a technology developed by the FIDO Alliance in collaboration with tech giants like Apple, Google, and Microsoft. It is an identification method that, unlike conventional passwords, allows users to log in using more secure authentication methods, such as facial recognition or fingerprints, simplifying the process and eliminating the need to create and memorize a password.

This innovation comes after WhatsApp, owned by Meta, announced last year its plan to support this technology, although it was initially only available for Android users. According to WABetaInfo, the latest beta version of WhatsApp for iPhone, available on TestFlight, already includes a new menu to create these passkeys. Although the feature is not yet enabled, it is expected to be available to beta users soon.

Since the launch of iOS 16, Apple users have been able to create and save passkeys using Safari and iCloud Keychain. With the arrival of iOS 17, this functionality extends to third-party applications, allowing authentication with passkeys using Face ID or Touch ID on all Apple devices.

WhatsApp has been working on other significant improvements. Recently, the platform released an update that allows users to authenticate in the app via email verification instead of SMS. There is also a new option in development for users to set a username that can be shared with others instead of a phone number.

Remember that WhatsApp is available for free on the App Store and requires an iPhone running iOS 12 or later, although the use of the new passkeys will require iOS 17 or a later version. Meanwhile, this update represents a renewed commitment to the security and privacy of WhatsApp users.
