Every new version of an operating system comes with interesting improvements and new features, but when it comes to security, the need to update becomes the top priority. With the release of iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6, as well as the corresponding versions of macOS and watchOS, Apple has implemented a series of security fixes that, even if they haven’t translated into active threats, are essential to maintaining the integrity and privacy of our devices. So, if we haven’t updated yet, we should do it as soon as possible.
Over 20 security fixes we cannot overlook
The iOS 18.6 and iPadOS 18.6 update includes over 20 security fixes across different areas of the system. Among them, one stands out in the Accessibility feature, where a bug allowed VoiceOver to read the device’s unlock code out loud. As with all the other fixes, there have been no reports of this vulnerability being exploited, and the solution is already available, so there’s no need to panic—but we should still apply the fix to prevent any potential risk.
Another notable improvement relates to the handling of audio files. Manipulating certain maliciously crafted audio files could cause memory corruption—an issue that, while technical, could lead to unexpected crashes or even open the door to unauthorized access.
Additionally, eight vulnerabilities related to WebKit—the engine behind Safari and practically any app capable of displaying web content—have been patched. These bugs could have allowed anything from confidential information leaks to unexpected browser crashes.
As always in security matters, Apple continues to support older devices. Alongside iOS 18.6, it has released iOS and iPadOS 17.7.9, which also fix these issues.
macOS Sequoia, visionOS, tvOS, and watchOS also receive critical improvements
macOS Sequoia 15.6 has been updated with fixes for over 80 security flaws, with improvements in key apps such as Finder, Safari, Notes, Spotlight, and System Settings. These fixes range from bugs that could cause unexpected crashes to more serious issues.
For those using older Mac computers, Apple has released security updates for macOS Sonoma 14.7.7 and macOS Ventura 13.7.7, ensuring that even devices not running Sequoia remain protected.
Meanwhile, visionOS 2.6, tvOS 18.6, and watchOS 11.6 have also received updates that patch between 17 and 19 vulnerabilities each.
Keeping our devices updated is essential
Updates don’t just bring new features. They also deliver invisible improvements to performance, bug fixes, and changes that strengthen the operating system’s security architecture. Each new version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS takes a step forward in protecting our data and devices (these are also 8 tips to improve our online security and privacy).
Updating is also as simple as going to Settings > General > Software Update on any device and tapping Update Now. In just a few minutes, our devices will be updated and will be not only more capable but also more resilient.
