How to set up Text Replacement

With text replacement, we can use shortcuts to replace them with longer phrases. When we type a shortcut in a text, it will automatically be replaced with the designated phrase. Setting up these text replacements on our iPhone or iPad is as easy as following these steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
  2. Navigate to General.
  3. Tap on Keyboard.
  4. Select Text Replacement.
  5. Hit the "+" button.
  6. In "Phrase", we type the final text we wish to see. In "Shortcut", we write the shortcut that will be substituted with the phrase itself.
  7. Click Save.

To delete a text replacement, we simply swipe left on it and then press Delete. Meanwhile, on the Mac, the steps to add new text replacements which, by the way, sync across devices, are as follows:

  1. Click System Settings in the Apple menu ().
  2. Proceed to Keyboard.
  3. Click on Text Replacement.
  4. Press the "+" button.
  5. In the "Replace" column, we enter the shortcut we intend to replace.
  6. In the "With" column, we input the final text we desire to show up.

To delete a text replacement on a Mac, we simply select it and press the "-" button, just as before.

Why use Text Replacement

Beyond allowing us to write long phrases in a simplified manner, text replacement can also help us correct regular writing errors, such as accidentally leaving an "e" at the end of "the". Some examples of text replacement could be:
