We live in an era of overwhelming information. We store and access a vast universe of data from our devices, which become extensions of our mind and memory. But how do we find that specific file or data we need among so much information? Fortunately, both on our iPhone and iPad and on our Mac, we have a very powerful tool: Spotlight, Apple's search engine.
Spotlight: our personal search assistant
Spotlight acts as a beam of light that reveals exactly what we want to find. This tool scans the entire content of our device: from contacts, calendars, emails, and all our photos, to the content of every app we've installed. Spotlight covers it all.
In fact, it goes beyond internal search, also exploring the internet to deliver results. Through integration with Siri, it expands its capabilities by offering general knowledge, such as word definitions, sports event results, Wikipedia entries or even checking the status of a flight in real-time.
How to use Spotlight on our iPhone, iPad, or Mac
Using Spotlight on our iPhone or iPad is quite simple. The exact steps for this are as follows:
- Go to the home screen or lock screen of our iPhone or iPad.
- From the center of the screen, swipe down with your finger.
- Use the keyboard to search and tap the result we want to open.
On the Mac, the system is even simpler. All we have to do is press Command + Spacebar and then enter our search term. This system actually works on the iPad as well whenever we have an external keyboard connected to the device.
When we perform a search in Spotlight, the results are organized into categories: PDF Documents, Contacts, Images, Bookmarks, History, Siri Suggestions, and more.
This categorization makes it easier for us to find what we need quickly and efficiently. Both on the iPhone and iPad, and on the Mac, although the presentation is different, the essence of the results is the same. Depending on the search we make, we will be shown more or fewer of these categories.
Spotlight has become an essential tool for all of us who use Apple devices. It allows us to quickly access the information we need, optimizing our time and improving our productivity. Undoubtedly, a tool we should be familiar with.
