Talk to ChatGPT on iPhone with the press of a button: Siri-like convenience is possible with this setting

ChatGPT’s capabilities are more than enough that, once we discover it, we’ll want to use it on a truly regular basis. Being able to ask a question at the key moment, quickly and easily, is essential—and on iPhone we have the option to do it just by pressing a button. While we have Siri on the side button ready for reminders, home control, or other actions, we can have ChatGPT on the opposite button. Let’s see how.

How to set up ChatGPT on the Action Button

So we can access ChatGPT as quickly as Siri, the first thing we need to do is install its official app on our iPhone. Once that’s done, we can sign in with our OpenAI account—or create a new one if we’ve never used the service—and then, in just a few steps, we can set up the shortcut. Here’s how:

  1. We install the ChatGPT app from the App Store and sign in with our account.
  2. We open the Settings app on iPhone.
  3. We go to the Action Button section.
  4. We swipe to Controls and tap the two chevrons that appear next to the assigned control at the bottom.
  5. We use the controls search bar and type “ChatGPT”.
  6. We select the ChatGPT Voice Mode control.

From that moment on, every time we press and hold the Action Button for a second, ChatGPT’s voice conversation mode will open directly. The first time we do it, the app will ask for permission to access the microphone, of course, but once we accept, we can start talking right away with no further interruptions.

Once the dialogue has started, we can leave the app while we keep talking. If we go back to the Home Screen, the session continues and the assistant remains active and visible in the Dynamic Island while it responds or listens to our prompts. If we want to end the conversation, we just have to tap the Dynamic Island to return to the app and press End.

This integration gives us an immediacy that we previously associated only with Siri. Now, with ChatGPT, we get something very similar, but with a different level of understanding and response generation. Best of all, this combination is especially useful because it gives us the freedom to choose the right assistant depending on the task. For a complex query or a more natural conversation, ChatGPT is our ally, but for carrying out actions in iOS, Siri is still the best option. So, who are we going to talk to?
