Shopping with ChatGPT is now possible. OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Instant Checkout, which lets us buy products from Etsy and Shopify directly through our conversation with ChatGPT. This new addition, still in the rollout phase, is set to significantly change the way we interact with the platform.
Instant Checkout: this is ChatGPT’s new shopping feature
Instant Checkout is a built-in purchase gateway within ChatGPT that identifies products matching what we’re asking for during the conversation and, when the item comes from Etsy or a Shopify seller, it gives us the option to buy it without leaving the app.
The system uses Stripe’s payment infrastructure and is built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol, a standard developed jointly with Stripe to make these kinds of interactions between AI agents and online stores easier.
For now, Instant Checkout only allows single-item purchases, but OpenAI has confirmed that they’re already working on enabling shopping carts with multiple products. So this is just the beginning. That said, although the feature is available for ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users, it’s currently limited to the United States.
Payment is made securely within the app, using our saved card or whatever payment methods we’ve configured. The ACP allows ChatGPT to send only the minimum necessary data to the merchant for the order. The seller confirms the purchase, charges using their regular provider, and takes care of shipping and after-sales service.
A smoother experience, without leaving ChatGPT
This integration completely changes how we use ChatGPT. Until now, when we asked for help finding a product, the information was limited to a list or some links. But now we can continue the conversation, ask follow-up questions, request alternatives, and if we’re convinced, complete the purchase without opening Safari or switching apps.
What’s more, the products available through Instant Checkout are naturally integrated into the conversation and don’t stand out from the rest. There are no ads or promotions. OpenAI has confirmed that the AI doesn’t prioritise products with this purchase option — the results are based on factors like quality, availability, price, and above all, offering the best result for us.
What this means for sellers
Merchants with shops on Etsy or Shopify can request activation of this new feature for their products. There’s a small fee per completed sale, but the integration is simple and could be a great way to reach new customers. Because, even though it’s only available in the US for now, OpenAI has said it will expand to more countries and platforms in the coming months.
Shopping with ChatGPT is just one of many new features we’re starting to see this year. Commerce integration, voice recognition, the new parental controls that now let us set limits… It seems ChatGPT is aiming to go from being a one-off tool to becoming an environment where we can do practically everything. We’ll see how it evolves.
