The Messages app, like many others, offers a series of settings and options that allow us to customize its operation according to our needs and preferences. Let's talk about three of these settings and how we can modify them to improve our communication experience.
Audio message expiration
One of the most practical features of iMessage is audio messages, which allow us to communicate in a more personal and direct way. By default, these messages, once sent or listened to, are deleted from the conversation after two minutes. However, we can modify this setting by following a few simple steps:
- Open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Messages.
- Under the "Audio Messages" heading, tap on Expiration.
- Choose the option that best suits our needs.
This way, we can listen to an audio message as many times as we need, whether we have sent it or received it.
Message history
The messages we send and receive are saved on our device until we delete them. However, sometimes it may be convenient for them to be automatically deleted after a certain time. There are various options:
- Open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Messages.
- Under the "Message History" heading, tap on Keep Messages.
- Choose between Forever, 1 year, or 30 days.
Read notification
When we send a message, right below it appears the status of the message. There might be nothing, indicating some issue with the connection and that the message isn't being delivered, or it can show the word "Send", letting us know that the message has been delivered to the recipient.
There is a third state for messages, "Read", which lets us know that the recipient has read the message. If we want the people who message us to know that we've read their messages, the steps to follow are:
- Open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Go to Messages.
- Turn on Send Read Receipts.
With this option enabled, every time we read a message, the sender will know that we've seen it. Very useful to ensure that communication has been effectively received and addressed.
Customizing the Messages app to our personal preferences enhances our experience and helps us manage our devices and daily communication more efficiently. By personalizing aspects such as audio message expiration, message history management, and read receipt notifications, we make Messages a tool more in line with our style and preferences.
