Artificial intelligence is advancing by leaps and bounds, and with the impending integration of ChatGPT into iOS 18, we're on the verge of witnessing a massive shift in how we interact with our devices. All this is part of the arrival of Apple Intelligence, but it goes far beyond what this entails. If we continue on this path, we're looking at a monumental change for Siri.
What is SearchGPT?
SearchGPT is a prototype developed by OpenAI, which combines the power of ChatGPT language models with internet search functionality. Unlike traditional search engines, SearchGPT does not provide links to web pages; instead, it's designed to offer clear and concise answers to the questions we pose. It also provides links to relevant sources, ensuring that the information is both accurate and timely, but its main focus is on responding, not making us do the research.
One of the standout features of SearchGPT is its ability to provide visual results that enhance the search experience. Images, videos, and other interactive media are presented in an understandable manner, allowing users to better grasp the topic they are researching. This is a radical change compared to the traditional text-based responses from current search engines.
ChatGPT integrates with iOS 18 thanks to Apple Intelligence, and it might not be alone
With the release of iOS 18.1 comes Apple Intelligence. The system is designed to respond to most of our requests locally. If it can't, it will ask Apple's servers, and if more is needed—with our consent—it will turn to ChatGPT.
Thus, when a question is posed to Siri, if it does not have sufficient information to respond, ChatGPT will ultimately be responsible for answering. And, although it has not been directly announced, SearchGPT might be part of this integration and dynamics. Apple already explained during the presentation of Apple Intelligence that OpenAI users who link their account in the iOS 18 settings could enjoy more models and functionalities.
"This is what I've found on the Internet"
The inclusion of SearchGPT in iOS 18, if confirmed, will completely change how we interact with our iPhone for certain queries. Gone will be the days when Siri had to tell us that it found results on the Internet. The real-time search for information and the formulation of a response based on this information will become the norm.
Thus, questions that are now completely impossible will find a clear and reliable answer in Siri. Current affairs, sports results, breaking news, and the like will be just an "Hey Siri" away. A change, if looked at closely, that could mark a before and after in how we relate to information published on the web. We will no longer need to search and investigate to find an answer; we will just need to pose the question. And the integration of SearchGPT into Siri, if it materializes, is a significant step in this direction.
