Apple has released the first beta of iOS 17.5 to developers, offering a glimpse into the new features and improvements coming to iOS devices in the upcoming updates. Although this update may seem minor at first glance, it includes several significant changes that will reach all public beta testers between this and next week. Let's take a look.
iOS 17.5: Design changes, new anti-tracking system, web app installation, and more
iOS 17.5 introduces some subtle but notable design changes, a new system to combat unwanted tracking, the ability to install apps from the web, and an update for MDM users. Here's the list of new features:
- The Podcasts widget has been updated with a new dynamic color that adapts to the cover of the podcast currently being played.
- In the Settings app, there's a new symbol for the "Passkeys Access for Web Browsers" menu within Privacy & Security.
- In the Apple Books app the icon for "Reading Goal" in the top navigation bar has been redesigned.
- A new system aimed at combating unwanted tracking of accessories. This system, discovered by 9to5Mac, seeks to protect our privacy by identifying tracking accessories, even if they are not certified by Apple or Find My, and helping us disable them if we wish.
- If iOS 17.4 brought alternative app stores to Europe (which will be disabled if we leave the EU and can be easily blocked), now one of the new features of iOS 17.5 is the ability to install apps directly from the developer's website. This "Web Distribution" feature will allow developers to distribute their iOS apps directly. Although this feature is available in the beta, there are currently no apps available through this method.
- An update for MDM (Mobile Device Management) users, who will be able to enforce a beta version during the automated device enrollment process. This improvement will provide IT administrators with greater control over iOS devices within their organizations.
With the arrival of the first beta of iOS 17.5, Apple continues to refine and improve our experience as users of their mobile devices. We'll keep an eye out for future betas to discover what other features will come with iOS 17.5 before its official release in May.
