How to tell if an iPhone or iPad is new, refurbished, a replacement, or customized

Cómo saber si un iPhone o iPad es nuevo, reacondicionado, un reemplazo o personalizado

Nothing on the exterior of an iPhone or iPad indicates whether it's a new device, a refurbished one, or even a replacement unit from a repair. Fortunately, this information is contained in the model number.

Knowing whether the device in front of us is new or refurbished is vital for determining its market value. Unlike new devices, which currently come with a three-year warranty, refurbished ones, which can be bought from the Apple Store online, enjoy a one-year warranty but always come with a new battery.

How to determine if a device is new, refurbished, or a replacement

The first thing we need to do is find out the device's model number. We can do this by following these steps:

  1. We open the Settings app on the iPhone or iPad.
  2. We go to General.
  3. We tap on About.
  4. We look for Model Number.

Tapping on Model Number will switch between a shorter one (usually a letter followed by 4 digits) and a longer one (generally 9 characters). The model number we're interested in is the longer one.

To identify the origin of a device, all we have to do is look at the first letter of the number. Each letter has a different meaning:

  • M: a new device.
  • F: a device used and refurbished by Apple to be like new.
  • N: the owner received this device as a replacement for their own after an official repair at an Apple Store.
  • P: a new device that includes an engraving or customization.

Special care must be taken with refurbished devices (F) that might be found at non-official sellers priced as a new device (M). Refurbished devices usually cost between 15% and 20% less than a new one. This is something we should consider when making some purchases.

Just like when finding out the age of our Mac, even if it no longer works, this is a very useful resource to know a little more about the device in front of us. Ideal for establishing its price in the second-hand market and avoiding surprises. All we have to do is ask the device itself. Its model number will give us all the information.
