If you use ChatGPT often, you've probably found yourself with a bunch of open conversations, each with a weirder title than the last, and no clue where that brilliant idea from a few days ago went. Well, that's over. ChatGPT now has Projects. And they're fantastic. Here's what they are and how to use them.
What are Projects and how to create one in ChatGPT
At the top of the sidebar, right above our chats, there's now a “Projects” section. Projects are a way to organize our conversations, files, and ideas by topic. Like having neatly labeled folders instead of random papers scattered across a desk. This way, everything’s in its place and easy to find.
We just tap the "+" or click “New project,” give it a name like “My novel,” “Trip to Japan,” “Ideas to keep the youngest entertained” or “Let’s cook”, and that’s it! Our workspace is ready. We can even click the folder icon above the project name (which we can change anytime) and give it a color to identify it quickly and easily.

Inside a Project, we can:
- Create new conversations that are saved directly within it.
- Move existing chats that are related.
- Upload files we want to keep close at hand and that ChatGPT can use as references.
- And add custom instructions so ChatGPT adapts to what we need in that specific context.
What are Projects for
With Projects, ChatGPT remembers what we're talking about. We don’t have to explain again who the main character of our story is or how we want a cover letter to be written. It already knows.
It’s a feature that makes working on long-term tasks much easier and more comfortable. Perfect for keeping everything related to one topic in a single place. For example, if we’re planning a trip, a wedding, a school project, or writing a book, there’s no need to scroll endlessly through our chat history — we’ve got the files, ideas, images, and texts all together. Nicely organized.
