The new “Search Here” button in the Maps app truly transforms the way we explore places beyond our current location. With this feature, Apple allows us to refine our map searches in a much more intuitive and precise way. Something that will be incredibly useful now that summer holidays are around the corner. Need to find the nearest supermarket to our hotel? This button makes our searches a whole lot easier.
“Search Here” reinvents how we search in Maps
Until now, when we searched in Maps, the app would prioritise our current location. And when we moved the map to a different area, although the app would try to update the results automatically, it didn’t always manage to show us everything we needed. This often led to incomplete or inaccurate results, forcing us to start over or adjust the search manually.
But now, with iOS 18, thanks to the new “Search Here” button, we can tell the system to focus the search exactly on the area we're looking at. We can freely move around the map and explore any region with results that are precisely adjusted.
How does it work? We just need to centre the map on the area we want to explore and tap the button. With that simple action, the system filters out irrelevant data and gives us hyper-localised results. Let’s say we’re planning a holiday in Paris (and here we should remember Apple Maps' Flyover Mode: an aerial perspective of the world's major cities). Now, we can easily navigate the map to discover a specific neighbourhood, look for nearby restaurants or cafés, and get results that are fully tailored to that exact location.
A simple feature that improves the whole experience
For those of us who use Maps daily, this gives us more control and accuracy, as well as greater confidence in the results we get. The app no longer tries to “guess” our intent — now it’s us who decide where to search.
So, with this seemingly minor but significant “Search Here” feature, Apple once again succeeds in making the complex feel simple, giving us tools that genuinely improve our daily lives without us almost even realising it.
