How to turn off your Mac’s camera during a video call so we can be sure no one can see us

Video calls are becoming an ever more common part of our daily lives. Although joining them with video on is practically the norm, there are times when we would rather not be visible, whether for comfort, privacy, or simply because we need a break. Let’s look at how to turn off our Mac’s camera with complete peace of mind.

Two ways to turn off the camera: blocking apps or restricting Safari

If we want to make sure a video calling app or service cannot access our Mac’s camera, we can do it in two ways depending on whether we use standalone apps or web-based services.

Blocking camera access for applications

To block camera access in apps such as Zoom, Slack, or Microsoft Teams, all we have to do is adjust the permissions in our Mac’s System Settings. This method disables camera access at the system level for apps, preventing them from even asking us for permission to turn it on. These are the steps:

  1. Open the Apple menu () and select System Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Click the Privacy tab.
  4. In the sidebar on the left, select Camera.
  5. Remove permission for any apps we want to block.

Any apps we remove from the list will no longer be able to access our camera under any circumstances.

Denying camera access for web services

If we use web-based services such as Google Meet or Microsoft Teams in Safari, we can stop those sites from accessing our camera directly from the browser. The steps are just as simple, and they ensure Safari blocks any attempt to use it:

  1. Open Safari on our Mac.
  2. In the Safari menu, select Settings.
  3. Go to the Websites tab.
  4. In the sidebar on the left, select Camera.
  5. For the websites listed, change the permission to “Deny”.

This setting not only blocks web services from accessing the camera, but also prevents them from asking us to enable it in the future.

Is it a good idea to turn off the camera during a video call?

According to some studies, 92% of executives believe that regularly keeping the camera off could be seen as a lack of engagement. In addition, nearly half associate this with distractions such as browsing the internet or using social media during the call.

That does not mean we should avoid turning off the camera whenever we feel it is necessary, but it is something worth bearing in mind if we want to avoid misunderstandings, especially when working remotely and showing our face helps create closer communication with the team.

The privacy guarantee: the green LED

Lastly, we should remember one key design detail: the small green LED next to our Mac’s camera always lights up when the camera is in use.

This LED is part of the camera’s power circuit, which means that if we do not see it lit, we can be completely sure the camera is not active.

This design ensures that our camera can never be used without our knowledge. If there is no light, we can relax: nobody is recording us.

As we can see, turning off our Mac’s camera with confidence during a video call is actually very easy. Whether we use apps or make calls through web services, we can ensure our privacy and peace of mind. We have full control over how and when our camera is used.
