Eve Room, review: the smart thermometer that goes far beyond automating our home

Eve Room

Seeing home automation merely as a control system for our home is seeing only half the story. A third of it, in fact. The real beauty of a smart home system lies in the three pillars that, interconnected, allow us to truly enjoy an intelligent home. Controlling lights, heating or appliances is just the first part, as there are two more. With the right sensors, the system becomes aware of the home’s condition and, either automatically or through the automations we define, can respond accordingly.

So, we talk about sensors, automations and only then control. And in this first category, we have to talk about the Eve Room. With a very compact design and extraordinary precision, this temperature, humidity and air quality sensor lets us take a huge step forward in home automation. Let’s take a closer look.

Excellent design and high-quality sensors

In its exterior design, the Eve Room is presented in a square format, with an anodised aluminium casing and a high-contrast e-ink display on the front. Thanks to this type of screen, readability is excellent from any angle. We can display large digits and prioritise temperature, humidity or air quality depending on the chosen display mode. How do we switch views? We simply tap one of the two touch-sensitive sides of the screen.

Given its design, we can hang it on a wall or place it on a shelf without it standing out. Measuring 54 × 54 × 15 mm, its presence is minimal, yet its data are available and its sensors constantly working to provide them.

The most interesting point about the Eve Room lies in its measurement of volatile organic compounds. The device’s star scale helps us keep the air at optimal quality simply by opening a window at the right moment or through automations such as activating an air purifier. Seeing the impact of cooking, cleaning or painting also makes us more aware of environmental health as a tangible metric we can improve through small decisions.

For temperature and humidity, the precision enables accurate automations. With an accuracy of ± 0.3 °C in temperature and ± 3 % in humidity, we have the reliability needed to adjust heating, air conditioning or our humidifier or dehumidifier with confidence.

Custom automations and guaranteed privacy

Integration with the Home app and Eve app allows us to create scenes and rules that, for example, turn on our purifier when air quality drops to three stars, turn off the humidifier when a humidity threshold is exceeded, or alert us when the temperature reaches a set limit.

With the data history, we gain a clear view of automation possibilities. The Eve app presents graphs by hour, day, week, month and year, helping us detect patterns, compare periods and understand which habits improve the indoor environment of our home.

The Eve Room is compatible with Bluetooth and Thread, the foundation of Matter. With a HomePod mini or Apple TV 4K, we have a network that, with virtually no latency, ensures that every automation is executed exactly when it should.

As for data, everything is processed locally. There are no cloud logs, only direct communication with our iPhone, iPad or home hub. Privacy without giving up the intelligence we expect from an accessory of this kind is one of the cornerstones of Eve’s strategy for all its products.

A product that goes beyond expectations where it matters most

According to Eve, the device’s battery lasts about six weeks per charge. In our tests, we achieved considerably more. When it’s time to charge it —something our iPhone notifies us about— we simply plug it in using the included micro-USB cable and enjoy roughly two months of readings. That translates to about six charges per year.

With Siri we can ask for the living room temperature, check the bedroom’s humidity or the kitchen’s air quality and, if necessary, take action through a specific preconfigured scene.

Although the Eve Room is neither a control device nor one of the first products that might come to mind when we think of investing in home automation, it is essential for unlocking the full potential of smart home systems. With VOC measurement, thermal and humidity precision, historical graphs and simple automation rules, this device enhances our home’s intelligence from day one.

Available on Amazon for 99.95 €, this is a very appealing product for measuring air quality, one that integrates seamlessly with the Home app and allows us to define reliable automations. The Eve Room is a key device for achieving truly intelligent home automation.
