The Messages app, which we use daily to send SMS and iMessage messages, often becomes the hub of our digital communication. As the number of conversations increases, maintaining order and consistency across the devices where we use the Messages app is crucial. This is achieved through message synchronization.
SMS and iMessage on all our devices
The key to the Messages app lies precisely in the fact that while iMessages can be received on any device, SMS messages can only reach us on the iPhone (this is the reason why Messages are sometimes blue and sometimes green). If we didn't do anything about it, different devices would have different messages. Likewise, we wouldn't be able to send messages to certain people from our Mac or iPad.
Fortunately, the solution is simple. We just need to sync the Messages app on our iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Let's start by enabling SMS message forwarding, as follows:
- Open the Settings app on our iPhone.
- Go to Messages.
- Tap on Text Message Forwarding.
- Activate all the devices we have.
With this, all devices, including iPads and Macs, will be able to send and receive SMS messages through the iPhone. Now, let's activate the synchronization of the rest of the messages. Thus, if we delete one on a device, for example, it will be reflected on all the others. The steps on our iPhone or iPad are very simple:
- Open the Settings app on our iPhone or iPad.
- Tap on our name.
- Go to iCloud.
- Tap on Show all.
- Tap on Messages in iCloud.
- Enable Use on this iPhone/iPad.
On the Mac, we'll do it similarly; specifically, the steps are as follows:
- Open the Messages app on our Mac.
- In the Messages menu, click on Settings.
- Go to the iMessage tab.
- Enable Messages in iCloud.
With synchronization and SMS forwarding properly configured, we ensure that the user experience of our Apple devices in communication is more pleasant and also significantly more efficient. With these settings, we'll be able to manage our communications more effectively, ensuring that we're always connected and up to date, regardless of the device we're using.
