The Apple TV remote, the Siri Remote, is central to the user experience of this device. The Siri Remote allows for intuitive and accessible navigation to all the functions offered by Apple TV (which should not be confused with the Apple TV app or Apple TV+). However, what happens when the remote stops working properly, gets lost, or simply isn't within our reach? Fortunately, Apple offers two alternative solutions to control the Apple TV without needing its physical remote.
Use the iPhone or iPad as an Apple TV Remote
Since iOS 11, Apple has allowed using an iPhone or iPad to control the Apple TV through the addition of the Apple TV Remote functionality to the Control Center. Setting up this option is quite simple. We open the Settings app on our iOS device and add the Apple TV remote to the Control Center. Once added, we can select the device from a list and connect it by entering a four-digit code that appears on our TV screen.
The interface of the Apple TV Remote on our iOS device will mimic that of the physical remote, offering a touchable top part to navigate through menus, along with buttons for the menu, play/pause, and Siri. However, there's a notable difference in the functionality of the volume buttons since iOS devices do not have an infrared emitter. To adjust the volume, it will be necessary to use the television's remote or the physical Siri Remote.
Use the Apple Watch as an Apple TV Remote
Another convenient alternative is using our Apple Watch as a substitute for the physical remote. To do this, ensure that both the Apple Watch and the Apple TV are updated and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
We open the "Remote" app on our watch, add the Apple TV by entering the code displayed on the screen, and we'll be ready to navigate the Apple TV from our wrist.
The Apple TV is undoubtedly an excellent home entertainment center, and reliance on its remote does not limit our experience. With these alternatives, we guarantee access to our favorite content under any circumstance, making flexibility and convenience standout features of the Apple ecosystem.
